A quick shoutout to my friends and former co-workers at Savance and the EIOBoard Team. Congrats on a successful rollout of an emergency mustering software system being used by the oil and gas industry! It was fun to be a part of this project, if only in a small way.

Building cool stuff is one reason I love being a software developer, and this project certainly qualified as “cool”. This new product by Savance is being used on oil rigs (first rolled out and tested on the rig pictured above) to account for all on-board personnel in the event of an emergency. In the bridge of this rig is a large dashboard that shows the result of the muster. The dashboard updates in real-time with the headcount at each muster station.

And… here’s the fun part, for me at least… I created the dashboard and the API that drives it! It’s a simple HTML page with some JQuery that continuously calls an API written in C#. The API returns a JSON string containing all of the muster headcount data, which the dashboard then parses and displays on the screen.

This is a video Savance made that explains how it all works:

Building awesome stuff like this is Reason No. 6 on my Top Ten Reasons to Become a Software Developer. See the rest of the reasons here!

After 20 years of software development, I created this website to help coach people who’d like to launch a career in this industry.  I’d love to hear from you! Thanks for being here.
